20,058 COVID-19 cases found in Kansas, 27,890 in Missouri. Experts expect more.
Update: This page is updated daily as the coronavirus pandemic continues. The latest figures were added about 5 p.m. July 13.
Since early March, cases of the new coronavirus have been reported in Kansas and Missouri. Worldwide there have been more than 13 million confirmed cases, with more than 3.3 million reported in the United States. There have been more than 135,000 COVID-19 deaths in the U.S.
As the number of confirmed cases in the Kansas City region continues to grow, state and local officials have issued emergency declarations. In an effort to limit the spread of the virus, some local governments issued stay-at-home orders requiring residents to halt many nonessential activities.
Kansas and Missouri issued statewide stay-at-home orders in March and April.
Early on, Missouri identified about three times as many coronavirus cases as Kansas, but Missouri has also tested about three times as many people. Missouri residents are testing positive at a rate of 5.5%. Kansas residents are testing positive at a rate of 8.1%.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says more people with COVID-19 are expected to be found as the disease spreads and more people are tested. Widespread infection in the population may mean large numbers of people needing medical care at the same time, possibly overwhelming healthcare systems.
In Kansas, coronavirus cases are tracked by the Kansas Department of Health and the Environment. In Missouri, they are tracked by the Department of Health and Senior Services.
