Triple digit increase in new COVID-19 cases reported in Kansas City metro area Saturday

The Kansas City metropolitan had a triple digit increase in new coronavirus cases Saturday as 141 new cases of the virus and three more deaths were identified.

In total the area including Kansas City and Jackson, Clay and Platte counties in Missouri and Johnson and Wyandotte counties in Kansas have 4,917 cases of COVID-19.

The highest increase in the county came in Clay County where 40 new cases of the virus were reported Saturday. Thirty-three new cases each were reported in Wyandotte County and Kansas City, 25 were reported in Johnson County, 10 were reported in Jackson County. No new cases were reported in Platte County.

The three new deaths were reported in Johnson, Wyandotte and Clay counties.

The increase Saturday was the fourth triple digit increase of the week. The number of new cases rose by 81 on Monday, 164 on Tuesday, 129 on Wednesday, 133 on Thursday and 90 on Friday. Tuesday’s increase was the highest increase in recorded new cases in the area since the first cases were detected in March.

Statewide, Missouri reported a total of 14,442 case with 809 deaths on Saturday. About 6.2% of all patients tested for the virus were infected, according to the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services.

The virus has infected more than 1.9 million people, killing more than 109 thousand according to a database maintained by Johns Hopkins University.
