Missouri sees number of COVID-19 deaths jump to 53; another 315 new cases reported

Fifty-three people have died from the coronavirus in Missouri, an increase of 14 from the day before, state health officials reported Tuesday.

The number of people testing positive for COVID-19 increased to 3,037. That’s 315 new cases from Monday, according to the latest statistics.

The number of patients hospitalized with the disease was 508 Tuesday, an increase of 69 since Monday.

The areas hardest hit by the virus include St. Louis County with 1,203 cases, St. Louis with 399, St. Charles with 221, Kansas City with 219 and Jackson County with 154.

St. Louis County has seen the most deaths at 15. Other areas reporting deaths are St. Charles and Greene counties with six each, St. Louis and Kansas City with five each, Franklin County with three, and Boone, Callaway, Camden, Carter, Cass, Clay, Cole, Henry, Jackson and Lafayette with one each. Three more deaths are being investigated as possibly caused by coronavirus.

The coronavirus has been more deadly to older generations, with those over 80 accounting for 20 of the deaths; 70 to 79 for 17; 60 to 69 for nine, 50 to 59 for five, and one each for those between 30 and 39 and 40 and 49. No deaths have been reported for those under 30, according to the statistics.

Missouri, which has a population of around 6.1 million people, has tested about 31,654 people. It has conducted more than three times as many tests as Kansas, which has a smaller population of 2.9 million. Kansas has tested 9,514 people.

Nine hundred people have tested positive for the coronavirus in Kansas and 27 have died, according to statistics released by state health officials Tuesday. There are 223 patients in hospitals in Kansas.

There have been at least 386,800 confirmed cases of the coronavirus in the United States. The number of deaths rose to 12,285 by Tuesday afternoon, according to Johns Hopkins University.
