Kansas City metro sees sharpest uptick in COVID-19 cases yet with 123 added Monday
The Kansas City area saw its sharpest rise in the number of new COVID-19 cases on Monday as some parts of the metro reopened.
With 123 cases added Monday, the area encompassing Kansas City and Jackson, Clay and Platte counties in Missouri and Johnson and Wyandotte counties in Kansas has recorded 2,507 cases.
Fifty-three of the new cases were identified in Wyandotte County and 50 were in Kansas City. Jackson County reported nine new cases, Johnson County had six, Clay County had four and Platte County had one.
Thirteen outbreaks — locations associated with five or more cases — have been identified in Wyandotte County.
Previously, the highest number of new cases was 104, reported last Thursday.
On Sunday, 98 new cases were confirmed.
Eight more deaths were also reported with five in Wyandotte County and three in Johnson County, bringing the metro’s total to 135.
Statewide stay-at-home orders covering Kansas and Missouri expired on Sunday.
Clay County and Platte County began reopening on Monday.
Restrictions in Jackson, Johnson and Wyandotte counties remain in effect until May 11.
Kansas City residents will remain under a stay-at-home order until May 15.
On Monday, Kansas reported 5,245 cases, including 136 deaths, while Missouri confirmed 8,754 cases, including 358 deaths.
