Officials report 63 new COVID-19 cases, four additional deaths in Kansas City metro
Health officials reported an additional 63 cases of the novel coronavirus and four new deaths in the Kansas City metro area on Monday.
A total of 3,779 cases have been identified in Kansas City and Jackson, Clay and Platte counties in Missouri and Johnson and Wyandotte counties in Kansas. That’s up from 3,340 cases reported a week earlier and 3,027 on May 11, according to data obtained by The Star.
The metro has recorded 177 deaths as of Monday afternoon, four more than reported Sunday. The total number of deaths is up from 162 the week before and 148 on May 11.
Videos of crowded pool parties at the Lake of the Ozarks sparked fear that the gatherings would cause new outbreaks. Across the region, more businesses have reopened and more residents have returned to workplaces — which officials also worry could lead to an increase in cases.
Monday afternoon, Wyandotte County once again reported the highest number of positive test results, with 1,263 cases and 72 deaths. Nearly 400 residents are deemed to have recovered from the virus, while 21 remain hospitalized.
Johnson County has recorded 731 cases and 61 deaths. According to county data, 450 people are presumed to have recovered from the virus.
In Kansas City, 1,050 people have tested positive and 25 have died. In Jackson County, there have been 520 cases and 15 deaths.
Clay County reported 148 cases and two deaths. Platte County has seen 67 infections and two deaths.
As of Monday, Missouri had reported 12,167 cases. That’s a 1.7% increase in cases over the past day and a nearly 8% increase from one week ago. The state reported 685 deaths. About half of the cases have been found in the St. Louis region.
Kansas, which has tested fewer people than Missouri, reported 9,218 cases and 188 deaths.
