COVID-19 deaths in Missouri increase by 10 Sunday, with dozens more cases reported

The number of people who have died from COVID-19 in Missouri jumped Sunday to 34, up 10 from the previous day, according to the latest statistics from state health officials.

The number of coronavirus cases also increased, bringing the state’s total to at least 2,367 people, according to the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services. That was an increase of new 76 cases, or more than 3 percent, from Saturday. There are 424 hospitalized patients.

The majority of new deaths occurred in eastern Missouri, with St. Louis County seeing its total deaths increase to 12 and St. Charles County see its total rise to 5. Carter County reported it’s first death, a 59-year-old man who had underlying health conditions.

Other areas where deaths have been reported in Missouri include the Springfield area in Greene County with 6 deaths, St. Louis City with 3, and Boone, Camden, Cass, Henry, Jackson and Lafayette counties with one death each.

The count does not include a third death in Jackson County and second in Kansas City reported Friday.

Of the approximately 27,173 patients tested in Missouri as of Saturday, more than 8% tested positive for the virus, according to data released Sunday.

The hardest hit areas in the state include St. Louis County, with 883 cases, St. Louis City with 298, Kansas City with 175, St. Charles with 157 and Jackson County with 139.

Kansas also reported 49 more confirmed coronavirus cases Sunday, seeing its total number of people testing positive climb to 747 statewide, according to statistics updated by state health officials.

The state also reported an additional death from COVID-19, bringing the total number killed by the disease in Kansas to 22.

Missouri has reported about three times as many cases as Kansas, but has also tested more than three times as many people. In both states, people have tested positive for the virus at rates close to 8 or 9 percent.
