Kansas City metro sees record jump with nearly 200 new COVID-19 cases reported Friday
The Kansas City metropolitan area added a record 193 cases of COVID-19 on Friday.
Previously, the metro’s highest number of new cases in one day was 164, on June 2.
The area encompassing Kansas City and Jackson, Clay and Platte counties in Missouri and Johnson and Wyandotte counties in Kansas has reported a total of 6,293 coronavirus cases.
Friday marks the third consecutive day of new cases topping 100 with 128 added Wednesday and 151 added Thursday.
Prior to June, there had been three days with more than 100 new cases in the metro.
This month, there have been at least 10 days when at least 100 cases were added.
Kansas City added 41 new cases Friday, Jackson County gained 43, Clay County added 15, Platte County added one, Johnson County gained 47 and Wyandotte County added 46.
One new death was also reported, in Johnson County, bringing the metro’s total to 213.
Missouri reported 17,201 cases, including 594 people who were hospitalized Friday and 948 deaths.
Kansas confirmed 12,059 cases, including a total of 1,035 hospitalizations and 254 deaths.
Nationwide, more than 2.2 million people have contracted the virus and more than 118,000 have died, according to Johns Hopkins University.
