Johnson County reports 12th coronavirus case found, Kansas total rises to 21

A 12th person has tested positive for the novel coronavirus Wednesday in Johnson County, officials announced on the county’s website.

The county did not provide details about the patient or how they contracted the rapidly spreading virus.

The case is the 21st reported in Kansas.

It is the third new presumed positive case of COVID-19 reported in the state Wednesday following reports of a positive test for a Wyandotte County veteran and another Johnson County patient.

According to Barbara Mitchell, the spokeswoman for the Johnson County health department, the cases in the county were reported Tuesday.

The rapidly spreading virus has infected more than 7,300 people across the country, with cases in every state, according to Johns Hopkins University. More than 100 people have died from the virus in the U.S.

Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly signed an executive order Tuesday halting mortgage forclosures and rent evictions during the global pandemic. She also ordered all Kansas schools to remain closed through the end of the school year.

At least 16 cases, including two in Jackson County, have been confirmed in Missouri. However, in a news conference Tuesday Gov. Mike Parson said he would leave to local officials any decisions to close schools and bars.
