For 21st day in a row, KC metro sees triple-digit increase in COVID-19 cases Sunday

Health officials reported Sunday an additional 279 confirmed cases of the coronavirus and two more deaths across the Kansas City metropolitan region.

In total, the virus has infected 11,428 of the region’s residents, killing 259.

Two additional deaths were reported Sunday — one in Johnson County and the other in Wyandotte County.

Sunday marked the 21st day in a row in which health officials reported a triple-digit increase in new daily cases across the metro, which encompasses Kansas City and Jackson, Clay and Platte counties in Missouri and Johnson and Wyandotte counties in Kansas.

Before Sunday, the metro saw an additional 349 cases Saturday, 278 Friday, 373 Thursday, 335 Wednesday and 335 Tuesday. The largest daily increase since the pandemic began was July 3, when 443 additional daily infections were confirmed.

As of Sunday, Johnson County outpaced other counties in the region in the number of virus-related deaths, at 93. Health officials there confirmed 2,967 infections.

Wyandotte County has seen 3,050 infections, including 88 deaths.

Kansas City continues to lead the metro in the number of positive test results, with 3,113. That count includes 34 deaths.

In Jackson County, there have been 1,586 infections, including 25 deaths.

Clay County has seen 558 cases, including 13 deaths. In Platte County, officials confirmed 154 cases, including six deaths.

The 11,428 cases confirmed across the metro was up from the 9,431 reported the week before and 7,785 two weeks prior.

Across Missouri, 27,443 residents have been infected, including 1,069 who have died. The positive test rate was 5.5%.

When Kansas last updated its data Friday, the state confirmed 18,611 cases, including 284 deaths. The positive test rate was 8.5%.

Nationwide, the virus has infected more than 3.2 million people killing more than 135,000, according to Johns Hopkins University.
