Kansas’ COVID-19 related death total reaches 84; more new cases reported Friday

The number of people testing positive for the coronavirus in Kansas has exceeded 1,700 and 84 people have died, state health officials said.

There are now 1,705 confirmed cases of the coronavirus in the state, according to statistics released Friday afternoon by state health officials. That’s an increase of 117 cases, up from 1,588 cases reported Thursday.

The state also reported four new deaths related to COVID-19, bringing the total to 84, up from 80 deaths reported the day before.

Kansas has tested 16,901 people and reports a positive test rate of 10%.

About three-quarters of the tests are conducted by private labs. The other tests are done by the state.

Kansas reports 375 people have been hospitalized for the coronavirus.

Half of those hospitalized are between 55 to 74 years old. One person hospitalized is under the age of 9.

Wyandotte County has been hit the hardest in the state, in part because of an outbreak at a rehabilitation and nursing home where 19 people have died and 116 cases were reported. The state reports there are 400 cases in Wyandotte County.

Johnson County has reported the second highest number of cases at 358, according to state numbers. It’s followed by Sedgwick County with 226 confirmed cases.

Leavenworth County is the other region to report triple digit figures with 115 cases.

Kansas’ statewide stay-at-home order was extended this week until May 3.

The U.S. has reported 679,374 cases of the coronavirus and 34,180 deaths, according to statistics from Johns Hopkins University.
