Kansas reports 102 new coronavirus cases, a 9% increase from Friday

Kansas confirmed 102 additional cases of the new coronavirus and five more deaths from the virus Saturday, nearly a 9% increase in cases from Friday.

In total, the state has reported 1,268 cases of COVID-19 and 55 fatalities. At least 293 people have been hospitalized for the virus according to data provided by the Kansas Department of Health and the Environment.

Of the more than 12,000 Kansans tested, about 10% had the virus, according to statewide data.

The state’s first confirmed case of the rapidly spreading virus was reported in Johnson County on March 7. The first death in Kansas was reported days later in Wyandotte County.

The two counties now report the highest number of COVID-19 cases and fatalities in the state. At least 283 cases and 13 deaths have been reported in Johnson County.

Wyandotte County has confirmed at least 315 cases and 24 deaths.

At least 10 of the deaths and 92 of the cases reported in Wyandotte County were connected to the Riverbend Post Acute Rehabilitation Center, the state’s largest outbreak of COVID-19.

In Missouri, state health officials confirmed 4,024 cases and 109 deaths on Saturday.

The virus has infected more than 519,000 people nationwide, killing more than 19,000 according to a database maintained by Johns Hopkins University.
