Kansas City metro adds more than 100 new COVID-19 cases, two more deaths
The Kansas City metropolitan area added 109 new COVID-19 cases and two more deaths on Monday.
The seven-day average for new daily cases is 119. One week ago, that average was 100 new cases per day.
The area encompassing Kansas City and Jackson, Clay and Platte counties in Missouri and Johnson and Wyandotte counties in Kansas has a total of 6,578 coronavirus cases.
The positive test rate was 5.28% in Kansas City, 4.94% in Jackson County, 3% in Clay County, 3.9% in Johnson County and 15.3% in Wyandotte County.
The two recent deaths occurred in Kansas City and Jackson County. The metro has a total of 224 deaths.
The University of Kansas Health System said they had 21 patients being treated for COVID-19, up three from Friday when there were 18. Of the 21, six require ventilators.
“If you have large gatherings, if you have people not practicing the public health guidance of physical distancing, masks and hand hygiene, we know that the virus will spread and that’s what we are continuing to see,” said Dana Hawkinson, medical director of infection prevention and control at the health system. “We shouldn’t be surprised to see that and I don’t think there’s really going to be a slowdown until there is a more adequate treatment, but also a vaccination.”
Missouri reported 18,143 cases, including 415 people hospitalized Monday and 961 deaths.
Kansas confirmed 12,465 cases, including 1,056 total hospitalizations and 259 deaths.
Nationwide, more than 2.2 million people have contracted the virus and more than 120,000 have died, according to Johns Hopkins University.
