Kansas City metro reports 56 new coronavirus cases for total of 2,956 cases, 146 deaths

An additional 56 cases of the new coronavirus were reported in the Kansas City metro area Sunday, according to data from state health agencies in Kansas and Missouri.

The number of people infected with COVID-19 rose to 2,956 across the region.

The area — which includes Kansas City and Jackson, Clay and Platte counties in Missouri and Johnson and Wyandotte counties in Kansas — has recorded 146 deaths, the same figure reported Saturday.

That’s up by nearly 570 cases and 19 deaths from a week earlier, according to data maintained by The Star.

Wyandotte County continues to outpace other counties in the metro in the number of positive test results, with 1,069 cases and 64 deaths. Nearly 190 people had recovered while 40 remained hospitalized, according to county data.

Johnson County has recorded 590 confirmed infections and 51 deaths.

In Kansas City, 767 people have tested positive and 16 have died. In Jackson County, 398 have been infected and 14 have died.

The number of confirmed cases in the metro recently rose after its residents were among the more than 400 workers at a St. Joseph food plant who tested positive for the virus despite showing no symptoms. Cases are counted in the county in which the infected person lives.

Testing at Triumph Foods in Buchanan County revealed 412 workers had the virus and no symptoms.

The meat packing plant was among the top 20 clusters of the virus across the United States, according to data kept by The New York Times. At No. 12 was the Lansing Correctional Facility, which has seen 690 cases among prisoners and 88 among staff. Three inmates have died.

In Clay County, health officials have reported 91 cases and one death. Platte County has seen 41 residents test positive.

Missouri reported 178 new confirmed cases of the virus Sunday, bringing the state’s totals to 9,844 cases and 482 deaths.

Missouri ranked eighth to last in per capita testing of its residents as of Sunday, according to the Coronavirus API Public Health Initiative, which gathers data from state health websites.

In Kansas, officials recorded an additional 233 cases Sunday, bringing the state’s total to 6,984 cases and 157 deaths.

The state ranked third to last ahead of Ohio and Oregon in per capita testing of its residents Sunday. It previously ranked last.

Missouri has tested more than 115,500 residents while Kansas has tested about 52,000.

Worldwide, more than 4 million cases of the virus have been reported, according to a database run by Johns Hopkins University. More than 1.3 million infections in the U.S. have led to more than 79,000 deaths.
