At least 356 people in Missouri have tested positive for coronavirus, and 8 have died

At least 356 people in Missouri have tested positive for the new coronavirus — an increase of more than 100 from the previous day, according to statistics released Wednesday afternoon by the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services.

Eight Missourians have died from the disease. Three of them were older adults from the Morningside of Springfield East assisted-living facility in Springfield, according to Greene County public health officials earlier this week. Other deaths have been reported in the city of St. Louis as well as St. Louis, St. Charles, Boone and Jackson counties.

Of the COVID-19 numbers released Wednesday, St. Louis County continues to lead the state with at least 129 cases. With ongoing testing, additional cases have been found in the city of St. Louis and Kansas City, where the number of cases have doubled or nearly doubled since Tuesday. In St. Louis, cases increased from 23 to 44.

Kansas City’s cases increased from 21 to 43 on Wednesday, according to the state’s website. The Kansas City Health Department later reported 51 cases. Four of those people were in the hospital.

In Kansas, public health officials announced that the number of cases found so far across the state reached at least 127. About 5% of those tested in Kansas carried the virus.

In Missouri, a breakdown of the number of cases by county was being updated Wednesday afternoon. A disclaimer posted on the state health department website states that cases by county are posted as information is verified and patients are notified, so the data may not be complete. Some test results come from the state laboratory while others are included from private laboratories.

According to the state health department website, at least 33 cases have been identified as travel-related while 19 were determined as cases involving people who had contact with someone with COVID-19.

Nine are identified as “no known contact” cases, and 295 cases are listed as “unknown.”

The cases reported Wednesday were also broken down by the age range:

  • 10 patients are under the age of 20
  • 73 patients are in their 20s
  • 52 patients are in their 30s
  • 43 patients are in their 40s
  • 69 patients are in their 50s
  • 59 patients are in their 60s
  • 50 patients are 70 or older

The next update on Missouri’s COVID-19 cases is expected 2 p.m. Thursday.
