Kansas City metro area sees three more coronavirus deaths, 45 new cases on Wednesday
Three more people have died from COVID-19 in the Kansas City metropolitan area, where a total of 3,415 cases have been found.
The area, encompassing Kansas City and Jackson, Clay and Platte counties in Missouri and Johnson and Wyandotte counties on the Kansas side, added 45 new cases on Wednesday.
That rate of increase was higher than Monday when 33 new cases were confirmed, and Tuesday when 30 new cases were reported.
Of the areas within the metro, Kansas City saw the steepest increase of new cases on Wednesday with 22, bringing its total to 924.
Wyandotte County has the most with 1,177. Johnson County has 664, Jackson County has 465, Clay County has 125 and Platte County has 60.
The three most recent deaths were reported in Kansas City, which had two, and Wyandotte County. A total of 167 people have died from the coronavirus in the metro area.
At the University of Kansas Health System, 15 patients were being treated for COVID-19, down from 16 on Tuesday. Seven of the patients were on ventilators.
Dana Hawkinson, medical director of infection prevention and control at the health system, said remdesivir has been administered to four patients. The drug shortens the time symptoms are present.
“We don’t know the full outcomes of all those patients,” Hawkinson said.
As of Wednesday, Missouri had 11,232 cases including 631 deaths. A total of 161,984 patients have been tested.
Kansas reported 8,539 cases including 178 deaths. Another 62,664 tests have been negative.
In the U.S., more than 1.5 million people have contracted the virus and 92,645 people have died, according to Johns Hopkins University.
