Coffey County, Kansas, reported its first death from COVID-19 in a news release on Wednesday.

A 90-year-old woman died Tuesday after she tested positive Monday for the new coronavirus.

“Our heartfelt sympathy goes to the family, friends, and caregivers,” said Coffey County Health Office John Shell in a statement. “This is the announcement that we’d sincerely hoped would never be necessary.”

Ten people in Kansas have died after contracting the coronavirus. Public health officials have identified 428 confirmed cases across the state.

Health officials are investigating who was in contact with the woman who died in Coffey County. Any close contacts will be isolated or quarantined at home, according to the release.

Kansas Department of Health and Environment Secretary Lee Norman confirmed Monday there was an outbreak in Coffey County in a skilled nursing facility and rehabilitation.

The company that operates the facility, Life Care Centers of America, confirmed later Monday evening at least 18 people tested positive for COVID-19 at its facility in Burlington.
