KC metro adds 186 new COVID-19 cases as KU hospital sees slight uptick in patients
The Kansas City metropolitan area added 186 new COVID-19 cases and two new deaths on Monday.
The area encompassing Kansas City and Jackson, Clay and Platte counties in Missouri and Johnson and Wyandotte counties in Kansas has recorded a total of 11,614 coronavirus cases.
The seven-day rolling average for new cases has risen to 287. One week ago, it was 239. On July 1, it was 204.
The positive test rate was 4.77% in Kansas City, 5.58% in Jackson County, 7.34% in Clay County, 5.32% in Platte County, 5.6% in Johnson County and 16.2% in Wyandotte County.
Two new deaths were reported Monday, both in Jackson County, raising the metro’s total to 261.
Physicians at the University of Kansas Health System reported 24 patients at the hospital being treated for COVID-19, an increase of two since Friday. Ten are in the intensive care unit, up from seven last week.
“We have had discharges and admissions, but overall the positive hospitalizations is going up so the number is going up compared to where we were,” said Dana Hawkinson, medical director of infection prevention and control at the health system.
Last week, the hospital was averaging 16 to 20 patients, he said.
Missouri has reported a total of 27,890 cases, with 888 patients hospitalized on Monday. A total of 1,083 deaths have been attributed to the coronavirus in the state. The positive test rate was 5.5%.
Kansas reported 20,058 cases including a total of 1,343 hospitalizations. A total of 288 people have died in the state from the virus. The positive test rate was 8.7%.
More than 3.3 million people have contracted the virus across the U.S. and more than 135,000 have died, according to Johns Hopkins University.
