Two more COVID-19 deaths reported from Springfield, Missouri, assisted-living center

Two more people from a Springfield assisted-living center have died from COVID-19, Greene County health officials announced Tuesday.

Both of the deceased were women: one in her 70s and the other in her 90s. The two were among four coronavirus cases confirmed at the Morningside of Springfield East assisted-living facility, the Springfield-Greene County Health Department said in a statement.

The news Tuesday marked the second and third deaths reported involving the same facility and the seventh and eighth COVID-19-related deaths reported in Missouri.

On Monday, health officials announced the first death: a woman in her 80s from Morningside of Springfield East who had tested positive for the disease.

All four patients identified from Morningside, including the three who died, had been hospitalized. At least 18 cases total have been identified in Greene County.

The staff at Morningside have been working with the Springfield-Greene County Health Department and the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services.

“Our thoughts are with those families at this very difficult time, said Clay Goddard, director of the Springfield-Greene County Health Department, in a video update.

In the same video, Springfield Mayor Ken McClure and Greene County Presiding Commissioner Bob Dixon also announced a stay at home order, which will be in effect after midnight Thursday and is expected to continue for 30 days.

At least 255 people have tested positive for the new coronavirus in Missouri, according to the state department of health on Tuesday. Statewide, other deaths from the disease have been reported in Boone, Jackson, St. Louis and St. Charles counties.
