10 more Missourians die from COVID-19 as total of confirmed cases surpasses 6,300

Ten more people have died from COVID-19 in Missouri in the past 24 hours, raising the toll to 218, according to the latest statistics released Thursday by state health officials.

An additional 184 people have tested positive for the coronavirus, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 6,321, according to data from the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services. On Wednesday, the number of confirmed cases stood at 6,137.

There were 590 confirmed COVID-19 patients hospitalized in Missouri, a decrease of 21 patients over the past 24 hours, according to data from the Missouri Hospital Association. Another 294 patients were under investigation for the disease, a drop of six patients from Wednesday.

Thousands of medical surgical beds as well as hundreds of intensive care units beds were available. Hospitals, however, were reporting shortages of personal protection equipment and testing supplies. Several hospitals were reporting less than a two-day supply of some materials.

St. Louis County has led the state with the most residents who have tested positive for COVID-19. As of Thursday, at least 2,507 cases have been identified in the county and 105 people have died there.

Other areas that have reported high numbers: The city of St. Louis with 909 cases and 21 deaths; St. Charles County with 476 cases and 26 deaths; Kansas City with 461 cases and 14 deaths, and Jackson County with 296 cases and eight deaths.

The majority of Missourians who have died from complications with COVID-19 are older adults, with those 80 years old or older accounting for 85 deaths. The state has provided a breakdown by age, which includes 58 deaths of people in their 70s; 46 in their 60s; 21 in their 50s, five in their 40s and three in their 30s.

As of Wednesday, 59,266 tests for the coronavirus have been conducted.

Meanwhile across Kansas, the number of people testing positive for the coronavirus jumped to 2,482 cases, up 271 from Wednesday, according to data released Thursday morning. That breaks a day-old record for biggest increase.

The number of deaths increased to 112, up two from the day before. The state has conducted 21,318 tests with 18,836 of them returning negative.

Nationwide, 856,209 people have tested positive for the coronavirus and 47,272 people have died from COVID-19, according to stats from Johns Hopkins University.
