Missouri reports 171 new COVID-19 cases Sunday; additional death brings total to 274

The number of people infected with the new coronavirus in Missouri increased by 171 Sunday, bringing the total cases confirmed in the state to 6,997.

State officials also reported an additional death, bringing the death toll to 274.

More than half of the cases confirmed across the state were reported in the St. Louis region, with 3,801 cases found in the county and city combined. In that area, 177 deaths have been reported.

In Kansas City, 493 people have tested positive for the virus and 15 have died. In Jackson County, 307 people have been infected and nine have died, according to the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services.

As of Sunday, more than 69,000 Missourians had been tested for the virus.

Missouri Gov. Mike Parson announced Friday he would extend the state’s emergency declaration through June 15, though the state’s stay-at-home order will end May 3.

The emergency declaration, Parson said, would allow continued flexibility in the use of funds to respond to the pandemic.

Across the state line, Kansas’ stay-at-home order is only effective through May 3.

A of Sunday, 3,174 people have tested positive for the virus in Kansas and 118 have died.

Kansas, which has tested fewer people than Missouri, has ranked last in the U.S. in testing per capita.
