KC-area restaurant, grocery, brewery updates in COVID-19: February openings, closing

Here’s our monthly update of restaurant, grocery and brewery openings, closings and what will be coming soon.

The COVID-19 crisis has upended the restaurant industry and pushed back many openings for weeks or months. A half dozen locally-owned and chain operations have closed permanently in the past few weeks, adding to a list of more than four dozen area restaurants shuttering for good during the pandemic.

But new eateries have recently opened in the Crossroads, Overland Park, and Prairie Village, as well as a Chipotle with drive-thru lane in Shawnee and a West Bottoms whiskey-only distillery and cocktail parlor.

Openings

▪ Black Agave Tequila Mexican Cuisine & Bar, 9720 Quivira Road, Lenexa. Soft opening with grand opening planned for Feb. 12.

▪ Bruú Café, Country Club Plaza, 4709 Central St.

▪ Chipotle Mexican Grill, 15830 Shawnee Mission Parkway, Shawnee. It has a drive-thru.

▪ Firehouse Subs, 800 N. Maguire St., Suite D, Warrensburg.

▪ HiTides Coffee, 519 E. 18th St. New coffee shop selling Donutology donuts, Meshuggah Bagels and Snoasis Ice Cream. Soft opening with grand opening scheduled for Feb. 12.

▪ KC Thai, 12250 W. 135th St., Overland Park.

▪ Juan Jose’s Taqueria, 13220 W. 62nd Terrace, Shawnee.

▪ Strip’s Chicken, 420 W. 85th St.

▪ Summer Moon Coffee, Glenwood Commons, 9127 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park.

▪ Sura Noodle Bar, Parlor food hall, 1707 Locust St. A 3-month pop-up by Sura Eats.

▪ Taco Bell, 1420 Prospect Ave.

▪ Va Bene Italian Eatery, 8232 Mission Road, Prairie Village.

▪ West Bottoms Whiskey Co., 1321 W. 13th St.

▪ Wingstop, 6852 Johnson Drive, Mission.

Closings

▪ The Ainsworth, Park Place, 11563 Ash St., Leawood.

▪ La Bodega Tapas & Lounge, Town Center Crossing, 4311 W. 119th St., Leawood. The owner said it is closed temporarily, but the logo is off the building and the landlords said they are looking for a new tenant for the space.

▪ Long John Silver’s, 6860 N.W. 83rd Terrace. Closed after nearly 25 years to make way for a new tenant.

▪ Noodles & Company, Legends Outlets Kansas City, 1703 Village West Parkway, Kansas City, Kansas.

▪ Ollie’s Local, 3044 Gillham Road.

▪ Southern Charm Gelato Shoppe, Country Club Plaza, 511 Nichols Road.

▪ Zoes Kitchen, Country Club Plaza, 100 Ward Parkway. The logo is off the building but Plaza officials would not confirm if it is closed permanently. Zoes Kitchen officials did not return calls or emails on the closing.

Coming soon

▪ Bamboo Penny’s, Park Place, 5270 W. 116th Place, Leawood. April opening.

▪ BeerSauce Shop, barbecue restaurant, bar and shop selling craft beer, artisan barbecue sauces, and small batch whiskey, 1219 W. 103rd St. March opening.

▪ The Big Biscuit, Sonoma Plaza, Lenexa. Mid-to-late April.

▪ Cliff’s Taphouse, 3044 Gillham Road. Mid-March opening.

▪ Cookies and Creamery, 533 E. Red Bridge Road. Dessert shop. No opening date was available.

▪ Crossroads Market, 640 E. 18th St. A community grocery store selling natural and organic items. It will offer produce by local vendors and plans more area locations this year. A late February opening is planned for the Crossroads location.

▪ Fajita Pete’s, Ritz Charles Plaza, 8909 W. 135th St., Overland Park. March opening. It also plans Brookside and Shawnee restaurants.

▪ Fountain City Winery, West Bottoms, 1409 W. 11th St. Hopes to open in February.

▪ The Golden Scoop, non-profit ice cream/coffee shop employing people with developmental disabilities, 9540 Nall Ave., Overland Park. Hopes to open in February.

▪ Hawaiian Bros Island Grill, 11600 Shawnee Mission Parkway, Shawnee, hopes to open on March 16; in Ward Parkway Center, 8805 State Line Road, in April; and at 4030 S. Noland Road, Independence, in May.

▪ Hook & Reel, 11721 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park. Mid-March opening planned.

▪ Kobi-Q Sushi, 435 Westport Road. Hopes to open mid-month.

▪ Providence Pizzeria, 415 Westport Road. No opening date was available.

▪ Stroud’s Express, Mission Mart Shopping Center, 5405 Johnson Drive, Mission. First quarter of 2021.

▪ Taco Bell, 6350 Johnson Drive, Mission. February opening.

▪ Wine 4 You, 512 Delaware St. It will cater events and offer in-home wine tastings and samplings for small groups.

▪ Wingstop, 8019 State Line Road. February opening.

▪ Yummi Crab, the Landing, 1336 E. Meyer Blvd. Early 2021

Coming later

▪ Andy’s Frozen Custard plans to open in Overland Park’s Prairiefire and at 7856 Wornall Road in spring 2021. It plans a summer 2021 opening at 4029 S. Noland Road, Independence.

▪ Bo Lings Express, 12070 W. 75th St., Merriam. If all goes as planned it would open in March.

▪ Captain D’s, 7525 State Ave., Kansas City, Kansas. After a fire it is set to reopen in 2021.

▪ Chick-fil-A, 95Metcalf, Metcalf Avenue in Overland Park. Early 2022.

▪ Chicken N Pickle, Prairefire, 135th Street and Nall Avenue, Overland Park. Fall opening.

▪ City Club Apartments, 1989 Main St. Chef Howard Hanna plans to open two operations — a natural wine bar and modern diner — on the first floor of the apartments. Spring or summer 2021.

▪ Dunkin’ donuts, 125 E. Linwood Blvd. 2022 opening.

▪ El Gold, cellar saloon, Hyatt’s Hotel Kansas City, 1228 Baltimore Ave. Late spring/early summer.

▪ Fiorella’s Jack Stack Barbecue, 8721 Ryckert St., Lenexa. Spring 2021.

▪ Saloon - A Craft Cocktail Bar, inside Old Shawnee Pizza, 6000 Rogers Road, Shawnee (at Nieman Road). Spring 2021.

▪ Scratch Gourmet Express & Catering, 3935 W. 69th Terrace, Prairie Village. Mid-to-late spring. It is currently available for catering.

▪ Shinju Sushi & Hibachi, 3935 W. 69th Terrace, Prairie Village. Late summer 2021.

▪ Sinkers Lounge, Power & Light District, 53 W. 13th St. Summer 2021.

▪ Snooze an A.M. Eatery, 7000 W. 135th St., Overland Park. 2021.

▪ Strawberry Hill Brewing Co., 601 Central Ave., Kansas City, Kansas. No opening date was available.

▪ Streets of West Pryor, Interstate 470 and Pryor Road, Lee’s Summit. Such national restaurants as Bibibop Asian Grill in March and Shake Shack (no opening date was available) are slated for the development. Locally owned Red Door Woodfired Grill also plans to open in the project.

▪ Taco Bell, 5700 E. Bannister Road. Spring opening.

▪ Taco Republic, Corinth Square, 14100 W. 83rd St., Prairie Village. Spring 2021.

▪ Taylor - The Sister of the Russell, 3933 Main St. By the owners of the Russell on Main Street. No opening date was available.

▪ Taylor’s Donuts, 1827 Louisiana St., Lawrence. March or April opening.

▪ Third Street Social, 5031 Main St. Late April opening.

▪ 39th Street Brewery, 1320 W. 39th St. No opening date was available.

▪ Tin Roof, 424 Westport Road. On hold due to COVID-19, so no opening date was available.

▪ Tom Colicchio’s food hall, Mission Gateway, Johnson Drive and Roeland Drive, Mission. Work on the project has halted again.

▪ Torchy’s Tacos, 11919 S. Strang Line Road, Olathe. Spring 2021. A location in Corbin Park, 6815 W. 135th St., is scheduled to open in summer 2021.

▪ Unforked, Woodside Village, 4719 Rainbow Blvd., Westwood. Spring 2021.

▪ Whataburger is looking at a Blue Springs site and is officially working on sites in Independence, Lee’s Summit and Overland Park. At least one is scheduled to open in 2021.
