Springfield-based frozen custard chain has its next KC-area targets: Waldo, Independence

Andy’s Frozen Custard, with seven area locations, now wants to open in Waldo and Independence.

The Springfield, Missouri-based chain plans a spring opening at 7856 Wornall Road.

Andy’s previously announced a spring opening for a location in Overland Park’s Prairiefire, 5821 W. 135th St. It also will open at 4029 S. Noland Road, Independence, probably in summer 2021.

The new Andy’s locations will have drive-thrus, walk-up windows and some outdoor seating.

Menu items will include chocolate or vanilla frozen custard with a variety of toppings to choose from, concretes, sundaes, banana splits, frozen custard bars, malts, shakes, old-fashioned sodas and freezes, floats and Zarlengo’s Italian Ice.

Andy’s ice cream and frozen custard are both made with milk, cream and sugar, but frozen custard gets its smooth texture with one additional ingredient: egg yolk.

Andy’s was founded in 1986 and it now has more than 2,000 employees and 93 company-owned and franchised stores across 14 states — Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri, North Carolina, South Carolina, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Texas.

Its area locations are in Blue Springs, Lee’s Summit, Overland Park, Shawnee, south Kansas City, Westport, and in the Liberty area, where a new location opened in late July.

All the local stores are company owned.

A Berbiglia Wine & Spirits store had previously operated on the Waldo site at the northwest corner of 79th street and Wornall Road. Berbiglia downsized in 2015, closing six area locations, according to Kansas City Star archives.
