Hawaiian plate lunch, seared Spam restaurant opening another Johnson County location
Locally owned Hawaiian Bros Island Grill is working on another Johnson County location, this one in Shawnee.
It is going through city planning to open on the site of the former Boston Market, 11600 Shawnee Mission Parkway. It plans a major renovation of the building and will demolish a house to the north so it can expand the parking lot. It hopes to open in early 2021.
It will have a drive-thru, as well as indoor and patio seating.
Brothers Cameron and Tyler McNie opened the first Hawaiian Bros in a former Long John Silver’s in Belton in early 2018. Now they have eight locations in four states.
“Ever since we opened in Belton we have been eyeing Shawnee Mission Parkway,” Tyler McNie said. “It has great traffic and a lot of homes there for us to serve great food to.”
Hawaiian Bros offers a traditional Hawaiian Plate Lunch with a scoop of white rice, a scoop of macaroni salad and a protein.
Other menu items include its signature Huli Huli chicken (marinated in teriyaki sauce and grilled fresh), Spam Musubi (rice and seared Spam glazed in teriyaki sauce and wrapped in dried seaweed), and Pacific Island Salad with Huli Huli chicken, mandarin oranges and chow mein noodles.
Hawaiian Bros now has area locations in Belton, Lawrence, Lee’s Summit, North Kansas City and Overland Park. It also has Texas locations in Austin and Garland, and two virtual kitchens in Chicago for pick-up or delivery only.
Boston Market pulled out of the metro earlier this year, closing its Overland Park and Shawnee locations.
