KC-area restaurant, grocery, brewery news: September openings, closings during COVID-19

Every month we run a long list of restaurant, grocery and brewery openings, closings and what will be coming soon. The COVID-19 crisis has upended the restaurant industry and pushed back many openings for weeks or months.

Here’s a list of some operations that have opened recently for drive-thru, take-out or curbside service, and some for dine-in. Several operations have confirmed that they will not reopen.

Kabuki Sushi, 333 W. Meyer Blvd. Reopened under new owners.

Sama Zama, 3906 Central St. Relocated from its original Westport spot.

Shack Breakfast & Lunch, 9329 Habringer St., Lenexa.

The Windmill KC, coffee shop, 840 S. 55th St., Kansas City, Kansas.

Closings

Abuelo’s Mexican Restaurant, Zona Rosa, 8541 N.W. Prairie View Road.

Arby’s, 4100 W. 83rd St., Prairie Village.

Big Whiskey’s American Restaurant & Bar, 9100 W. 135th St., Overland Park. Company officials did not respond to questions on the closing. The logo is off the building and the location is no longer listed on its website.

Karbon, Parlor food hall, 1707 Locust St.

Mudbug 2.0, Parlor food hall, 1707 Locust St. It still has its Northland location and food truck.

Old Chicago Pizza & Taproom, Corbin Park, 6815 W. 135th St., Suite A, Overland Park.

Pita Blu, 7335 W. 119th St., Overland Park. The owner lost his lease and hopes to reopen in another spot.

Ruby Jean’s Juicery, Town Pavilion, 1111 Main St., Suite 165.

Songbird Cafe, 1529 Grand Blvd.

Tapcade, 1701 McGee St.

Urban Table, Corinth Square, 8232 Mission Road, Prairie Village.

Coming soon

Acapulco Paradise, Oak Park Mall, 95th street and Quivira Road, Overland Park. Mid-September.

Black Agave Tequila Mexican Cuisine & Bar, 9720 Quivira Road, Lenexa. Early November.

Brookside Beef Co., 751 E. 63rd St. The founder of Brookside Poultry is relocating the restaurant and will open the Brookside Beef sister concept in late September.

La Fuente Mexican Street Food, Legends Outlets Kansas City, 10932 Stadium Drive, Kansas City, Kan. Fall opening.

Loews Kansas City Hotel, 1515 Wyandotte St. The Stillwell restaurant planned to open this summer but the opening has been pushed back.

LongHorn Steakhouse, 95Metcalf South, at 95th Street and Metcalf Avenue in Overland Park. Late fall.

Ludo’s, shuffleboard bar, 325 E. 31st St. Late October.

Made in KC Trolley, River Market, 426 Delaware St., hopes to open in September.

It will have a cafe and bar as well as some limited local goods and gifts. Original trolley seats will be used for interior seating and it will have a patio.

Made in KC Cafe, 325 E. 31st St. Late October. It also will open a retail shop in the new development.

Made in KC Lee’s Summit Marketplace, 860-U N.W. Blue Parkway, Lee’s Summit, plans to open in September. It will have a cafe and bar, along with 14 shops, many featuring Kansas City artists and makers.

Mattie’s Foods, 633 E. 63rd St., Suite 110. By the end of September.

Midtown Market, 3967 Main St. Formerly called Worlds Grocer it plans to open in early October.

Papa Keno’s Pizzeria, 14850 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park. Oct. 15.

Phikul Thai Bistro, River Market, 15 E. Fifth St. Hopes to open in September.

Smoketown BBQ, 7702 Shawnee Mission Parkway, Overland Park. September opening.

Starbucks, One North, at Interstate 29 and Armour Road, plans a late September opening.

Strip’s Chicken, 420 W. 85th St. October opening.

T-Shotz, golf and entertainment complex, Metro North Crossing, U.S. 169 and Northwest Barry Road. Soft opening early October.

The Town Company, Hotel Kansas City, 128 W. 13th St. Fall opening scheduled.

Unforked, Woodside Village, 4719 Rainbow Blvd., Westwood. The owner did not respond to questions on the opening.

West Bottoms Whiskey Co., 1321 W. 13th St. November opening scheduled.

Coming later

Andy’s Frozen Custard plans to open in Overland Park’s Prairiefire, and at 7856 Wornall Road in spring 2021. It plans a summer 2021 opening at 4029 S. Noland Road, Independence.

The Big Biscuit, Sonoma Plaza, Lenexa. Early 2021 opening.

Big Whiskey’s American Restaurant & Bar, Southeast Fourth and South Salem streets, Oak Grove. It was scheduled to open in July but corporate officials did not respond to questions on the status of the restaurant.

Bluhawk, 159th Street and Antioch Road in Overland Park. Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers plans to open “later this year.” Saltgrass Steakhouse planned to open a location there this year but officials couldn’t be reached for comment.

Captain D’s, 7525 State Ave., Kansas City, Kansas. After a fire it is set to reopen in late 2020 or early 2021.

Chick-fil-A wants to open in the 95Metcalf development at 95th Street and Metcalf Avenue in Overland Park.

City Club Apartments, 1989 Main St. Chef Howard Hanna plans to open two operations — a natural wine bar and modern diner — on the first floor of the apartments. Spring or summer 2021.

Fajita Pete’s. It is in negotiations for an Overland Park location that would open this year. It also plans Brookside and Shawnee restaurants.

Jersey Mike’s, Sonoma Plaza, Lenexa. Early 2021 opening.

Lion’s Choice, Waldo, 1621 W. 76th St. Plans are paused.

Madison’s Neighborhood Eatery, 915 to 991 W. 44th St. It planned to open this summer but now the opening has been pushed back indefinitely.

Meat Mitch Barbecue, Ranch Mart North, 3600 W. 95th St., Leawood. Hopes to open in spring 2021.

One North, at Interstate 29 and Armour Road. The development has been slowed by the COVID-19 crisis including Flow House.

Pickle Bar + Kitchen, 135th Street and Switzer Road, Overland Park. Opening is on hold due to COVID-19, the owners said.

PT’s Coffee Roasting Co., 8139 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park. Plans are on hold.

Tom Colicchio’s food hall, Mission Gateway, Johnson Drive and Roeland Drive, Mission. Work on the project has halted again.

Whataburger is looking at a site at Douglas Street and St. Luke’s Boulevard in Lee’s Summit, Lee’s Summit city officials said. It also plans to open locations in Kansas.
