He started cooking for his Jamaican community in KC. Now he’s opening a restaurant

Patrick Bogle moved to the United States from Jamaica eight years ago. But it wasn’t long before he was wooing Aurielle James with his family recipes.

Those dishes, along with his love of family, had their influence. They married in 2014.

Bogle opened a tiny neighborhood eatery to serve the local Jamaican community. But soon the word spread and he got more business than he could handle.

So now the couple have taken over a building on bustling Troost for 1VP Restaurant.

It will have mostly Jamaican dishes but also some other Caribbean cuisine.

Breakfast will include braised liver or kidney, ackee and saltfish, porridge and pastries.

Lunch and dinner items will include chicken (jerk, curried, brown stewed, fried or baked), braised oxtail, cow feet, curried goat, red snapper, shrimp and lobster. All entrees come with two sides such as rice and peas, cabbage, and plantains.

It will serve house-made juices, fruit punch, and carrot juice with lime or milk. Look for such desserts as Jamaican rum cake, potato pudding and strawberry cake.

The restaurant, at 6024 Troost Ave., is scheduled to open August 15.
