KC-area restaurant, grocery, brewery updates during COVID-19: August openings, closings

Every month we run a long list of restaurant, grocery and brewery openings, closings and what will be coming soon. The COVID-19 crisis has upended the restaurant industry and pushed back many openings for weeks or months.

Here’s a list of some operations that have opened recently for drive-thru, take-out or curbside service, and some for dine-in. Several operations have confirmed that they will not reopen.

Openings

Aunt Mildred’s, food truck, 10805 E. Truman Road, Independence.

Cactus Grill, Bluhawk, 7841 W. 159th St., Overland Park.

Cafe Main, Red Bridge Shopping Center, 3523 E. Red Bridge Road.

District Fish & Pasta, 1664 E. 63rd St.

Gigi’s Wellness Cafe, 1103 Westport Road.

KC Southern Comfort Cafe, 4200 E. 35th St.

Lion’s Choice, 440 N.W. Chipman Road, Lee’s Summit.

Loews Kansas City Hotel, 1515 Wyandotte St. Horsefeather Social, a seasonal rooftop bar and lounge on the seventh floor. Bar Stillwell on the lobby level. Red Wheat Baking Co., a grab-and-go bakery on the lobby level.

Loews Kansas City Hotel has a small bakery and coffee shop, Red Wheat Baking Co., on the lobby level. Menu items include Parisi coffee, chocolate from Andre’s, oatmeal parfaits, burnt end sandwiches, and Korean fried chicken. It also has a small retail area.

Nekter Juice Bar, 4800 Main St.

The Post Chicken & Beer, inside Jax Fish House & Oyster Bar, 4814 Roanoke Parkway.

Soulcentricitea, Wonder Shops + Flats, 1106 E. 30th St.

Wahlburgers, Hy-Vee, 301 N.E. Rice Road, Lee’s Summit.

Yoli Tortilleria, 1668 Jefferson St. Flour tortillas made fresh and retail shop.

Closings

Burger King, Waldo, 340 W. 72nd St. A sign on the door says the restaurant is closed.

Freshwater (Fine) Dining, 3711 Summit St.

Mad Man’s KC BBQ, Lenexa Public Market, 8750 Penrose Lane, Lenexa. Officially closed in June after shutting down for the shelter-in-place order, according to market officials. The owners couldn’t be reached for comment.

Marrio’s Donut Shop, 8930 W. 95th St., Overland Park, announced its permanent closing on May 31.

Panera Bread, Oak Park Mall, 11319 W. 95th St., Overland Park. Mall officials said the lease expired. Panera officials did not respond.

Pie Five Pizza Co., 6809 Johnson Drive, Mission, closed in July. Another Pie Five closed at 13366 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, in May, and a new concept has replaced it.

Pizza Street Buffet, 7399 Quivira Road, Shawnee. Decided not to renew its lease in June.

Coming soon

Banksia, 4800 Main St., Suite 103. Mid-to-late August opening scheduled for breakfast and lunch only with dinner service added in mid-September.

The Big Biscuit, 4039 Mill St. in Westport. Fall opening planned.

Brookside Beef Co., 751 E. 63rd St. The founder of Brookside Poultry will relocate the restaurant and open the Brookside Beef sister concept in September.

Bruu Cafe, Country Club Plaza, 4709 Central Ave. Late August.

Capriotti’s Sandwich Shop ,11902 W. 119th St., Overland Park. Late August.

Clay and Fire, 815 W. 17th St. Opening for breakfast only starting Saturday. Lunch and dinner service will start in the next few weeks.

Coach’s Bar & Grill, 6700 College Blvd., Overland Park. Late August.

The Combine, deli, pizza and bar in the Wonder Shops + Flats, 2999 Troost Ave. It hopes to open in September.

El Maguey Mexican Restaurant, 13612 Washington St. Mid-August.

Fud, 10 Main St., Parkville. Later this month.

Goat and Rabbit, 1804 W. 39th St. Officials did not return phone calls seeking more information.

Hot Rocks Pizza Kitchen, 10235 N. Oak Trafficway. Late August.

Imo’s Pizza, 4200 Rainbow Blvd., Kansas City, Kan. Fall opening.

Jersey Mike’s, 9220 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park. No opening date was available.

Jovito’s Italian Cafe, 7408 Wornall Road. Early October.

La Fuente Mexican Street Food, Legends Outlets Kansas City, 10932 Stadium Drive, Kansas City, Kan. Fall opening.

Loews Kansas City Hotel, 1515 Wyandotte St. The Stillwell restaurant planned to open this summer but the opening has been pushed back.

LongHorn Steakhouse, 95Metcalf South, at 95th Street and Metcalf Avenue in Overland Park. Late fall.

Ludo’s, shuffleboard bar, 325 E. 31st St. Late October.

Made in KC Trolley, River Market, 426 Delaware St., hopes to open by September.

It will have a cafe and bar as well as some limited local goods and gifts. Original trolley seats will be used for interior seating and it will have a patio.

Made in KC Cafe, 325 E. 31st St. Late October. It also will open a retail shop in the new development.

Made in KC Lee’s Summit Marketplace, 860-U N.W. Blue Parkway, Lees Summit, plans to open in early September. It will have a cafe and bar, along with 14 shops, many featuring Kansas City artists and makers.

Midtown Market, 3967 Main St. Formerly called Worlds Grocer it plans to open later this month.

1VP Restaurant, 6024 Troost Ave. Plans to open Saturday.

Papa Keno’s Pizzeria, 14850 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park. Sept. 15.

Phikul Thai Bistro, River Market, 15 E. Fifth St. The owners couldn’t be reached fro comment.

Shack Breakfast & Lunch, 9329 Habringer St., Lenexa. By late August.

The Windmill KC, coffee shop, 840 S. 55th, Kansas City, Kansas. Plans to open Saturday.

Coming later

Andy’s Frozen Custard plans to open in Overland Park’s Prairiefire in spring 2021.

Big Whiskey’s American Restaurant & Bar, Southeast Fourth and South Salem streets, Oak Grove. It planned a Fourth of July opening but construction has not started and company officials said they had “no update at this time.”

Bluhawk, 159th Street and Antioch Road in Overland Park. Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers plans to open “later this year.” Saltgrass Steakhouse planned to open a location there this year but officials couldn’t be reached for comment.

Captain D’s, 7525 State Ave., Kansas City, Kansas. After a fire it is set to reopen in late 2020 or early 2021.

Chick-fil-A wants to open in the 95Metcalf development at 95th Street and Metcalf Avenue in Overland Park.

Chicken N Pickle, Prairefire, 135th Street and Nall Avenue, Overland Park. Spring 2021.

Lion’s Choice, Waldo, 1621 W. 76th St. Plans are paused.

Madison’s Neighborhood Eatery, 915 to 991 W. 44th St. It planned to open this summer but now the opening has been pushed back indefinitely.

Meat Mitch Barbecue, Ranch Mart North, 3600 W. 95th St., Leawood. Hopes to open in spring 2021.

One North, at Interstate 29 and Armour Road. The development has been slowed by the COVID-19 crisis including Flow House.

Pickle Bar + Kitchen, 135th Street and Switzer Road, Overland Park. Opening is on hold due to COVID-19, the owners said.

PT’s Coffee Roasting Co., 8139 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park. Plans are on hold.

Tom Colicchio’s food hall, Mission Gateway, Johnson Drive and Roeland Drive, Mission. Work on the project has halted again.

Whataburger is looking at a site at Douglas Street and St. Luke’s Boulevard in Lee’s Summit, the Lee’s Summit city officials said. It also plans to open locations in Kansas.
