Minsky’s new St. Louis Provel pizza? To some loyal Kansas Citians, it ‘is so wrong & non-KC’
Imo’s Pizza offers Provel as a cheese choice, but they are a St. Louis company. Likewise Lion’s Choice, which offers it as a topping on its slow-roasted beef.
But when Kansas City-based Minsky’s Pizza Cafe & Bar puts it on the menu, even as a limited-time offer, well, that has some locals worked up.
Kansas City concerns were voiced on Twitter: “This is so wrong & non-KC.” “Matzo with ketchup spread on it and then topped with bleached Velveeta is not pizza.” “Why would you ruin your brand to satisfy St Louis?”
But another fan added, “If anyone can breathe life into that abomination of a pizza, it is Minsky’s.”
Minsky’s new St. Louis-style pizza has an extra-thin crispy cracker crust, its sweet Minskitoni sauce, Wisconsin Mozzarella and Provel, which they describe as a combination of cheddar, Swiss, and provolone cheeses.
It is offered at just three of Minsky’s 18 locations in the Kansas City area and Lawrence — Prairie Village, south Plaza and Southwest Boulevard. Several fans were disappointed that it wasn’t at their local Minsky’s.
Minsky’s officials weren’t available for comment.
Minsky’s also put Provel on its “Chouteau Grand” 40th Anniversary Gourmet Pizza in 2016. The pizza played tribute to early French influences in Kansas City, and featured Zarda Bar-B-Q and hand-grated Mozzarella and Provel.
Meanwhile, Imo’s Pizza KC even dropped into the unfolding Twitter pizza debate while promoting its Overland Park location and new restaurant opening this fall in Kansas City, Kan.
But enough about St. Louis, right? Loyal Kansas City fans will be rewarded later this week.
Minsky’s will introduce a new limited-edition Oktoberfest Gourmet Pizza featuring two of Kansas City’s favorite companies.
The pizza will launch Thursday with smoked sausage from Joe’s Kansas City Bar-B-Que and an Alfredo-mustard barbecue sauce made with Boulevard Brewing Co.’s Pale Ale beer.
It also will have Wisconsin white cheddar cheese curds, tater tots, smoked bacon and 100% Wisconsin mozzarella cheese, and come with a side of creamy cheese dipping sauce topped with jalapenos and smoked bacon.
And it is available in any Minsky’s crust, in any size and at any location.
