KC-area restaurant, grocery, brewery updates during COVID-19: Openings, closings, delays

Every month we run a long list of restaurant, grocery and brewery openings, closings and what will be coming soon. The COVID-19 crisis has upended the restaurant industry and pushed back many openings for weeks or months.

Here’s a list of some operations that have opened recently for drive-thru, take-out or curbside service, and some for dine-in. Several operations have confirmed that they will not reopen.

Openings

▪ Billie’s Grocery, 3216 Gillham Plaza, Suite 100. Mostly organic, nutrient-dense foods.

▪ Creative Culture, gourmet milkshakes and more, 207 Westport Road.

▪ Cultivare Greens and Grains, 13366 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park. Plans to open at 11 a.m. Wednesday.

▪ Daylight Coffee & Donuts. New owners of the Basehor, Gardner and Leavenworth shops have added Blue Chip Cookies and Sylas and Maddy’s Homemade Ice Cream.

▪ Double Tap KC, 310 Oak St., virtual reality arcade bar.

▪ Drastic Measures, cocktail bar, 5817 Nieman Road, Shawnee.

▪ Duck & Roll, 4800 Main St., Suite 102.

▪ Geo’s Cheese, 221 E. Gregory Blvd.

▪ Gyu-Kaku Japanese BBQ, Bluhawk, 7865 W. 159th St., Overland Park.

▪ Fénix, Strang Hall food court, 7313 W. 80th St., Overland Park.

▪ Hawaiian Bros. Island Grill, 304 S.E. Missouri 291, Lee’s Summit.

▪ Incredible Pizza Co., 13110 W. 62nd Terrace, Shawnee.

▪ Ixtapa Fine Mexican Cuisine, 7305 W. 95th St., Overland Park.

▪ Lost Evenings Brewing Co., 8625 Hauser Court, Lenexa.

▪ McLain’s Market Shawnee, 5833 Nieman Road, Shawnee.

▪ Mr. Brew’s Taphouse, 8021 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park.

▪ Parisi Cafe, The Vue, 7261 W. 80th St., Overland Park.

▪ Queen Priscilla’s, 809 W. 39th St., Suite 110.

▪ Ramsey’s Burgers, 13109 Holmes Road (by the owners of the new Martin City Coffee, just to the south).

▪ Rockcreek Brewing Co., 5880 Beverly Ave., Mission. Taproom closed for the holiday but reopens Wednesday.

▪ Seafood Island, 10810 W. 75th St., Shawnee.

▪ Southern Kitchen, 13135 State Line Road.

▪ Subway Cafe, closed since January, it has reopened at 11011 Antioch Road, Overland Park.

▪ Summer Salt Ice Cream, Corinth Square, 4051 Somerset Drive, Prairie Village.

▪ Starbucks, Crown Center, 2450 Grand Blvd., Suite 132.

▪ Torchy’s Tacos, Ward Parkway Center, 8815 State Line Road.

Closings

▪ Applebee’s, 7901 W. 151st St., Overland Park.

▪ Boru, Waldo, 500 W. 75th St.

▪ C. Frogs BBQ Steak Whiskey, 3935 W. 69th Terrace, Prairie Village. The landlord has not confirmed the operation is permanently closed, but the signage has been removed from the facade and the phone number has been disconnected.

▪ 54th Street Grill & Bar, 12130 S. U.S. 71 highway, Grandview.

▪ Flying Saucer Draught Emporium, Power & Light District, 101 E. 13th St.

▪ Jose Pepper’s Border Grill & Cantina, The Village at Briarcliff, 4125 N. Mulberry Drive.

▪ Nara, 1617 Main St.

▪ Plaza III, the Steakhouse, 12631 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park.

▪ Porto do Sul, 11900 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park.

▪ Rheinland Restaurant, 208 N. Main St., Independence. According to its website the owners retired after more than 29 years. They couldn’t be reached for comment.

▪ Stagecoach Tavern, 9617 W. 87th St., Overland Park.

▪ Winstead’s, 4971 W. 135th St., Leawood.

Coming soon

▪ Atomic Cowboy, Denver Biscuit Co., Fat Sully’s and Frozen Gold, Westport, 4140 Pennsylvania Ave. July 21 opening scheduled.

▪ Banksia, 4800 Main St., Suite 103. July 20 opening scheduled.

▪ The Big Biscuit, 4039 Mill St. in Westport. Fall opening planned.

▪ Brookside Beef Co., 751 E. 63rd St. The founder of Brookside Poultry will relocate the restaurant and open the Brookside Beef sister concept in late July or early August.

▪ Bruu Cafe, Country Club Plaza, 4709 Central Ave. Late August.

▪ Cactus Grill, Bluhawk, 7841 W. 159th St., Overland Park. Late July or early August.

▪ Capriotti’s Sandwich Shop ,11902 W. 119th St., Overland Park. Late August.

▪ Coach’s Bar & Grill, 6700 College Blvd., Overland Park. Early-to-mid August.

▪ The Combine, deli, pizza and bar in the Wonder Shops + Flats, 2999 Troost Ave. No opening date was available.

▪ Fud, 10 Main St., Parkville. Later this month.

▪ Goat and Rabbit, 1804 W. 39th St. Officials did not return phone calls seeking more information.

▪ Jersey Mike’s, 9220 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park. No opening date was available.

▪ La Fuente Mexican Street Food, Legends Outlets Kansas City, 10932 Stadium Drive, Kansas City, Kan. Fall opening.

▪ Lion’s Choice, 440 N.W. Chipman Road in Lee’s Summit. Aug. 14.

▪ Made in KC Trolley, River Market, 426 Delaware St., is scheduled to open at the end of July. It will have a cafe and bar as well as some limited local goods and gifts. Original trolley seats will be used for interior seating and it will have a patio.

▪ Made in KC Lee’s Summit Marketplace, 860-U N.W. Blue Parkway, Lees Summit, plans to open in early September. It will have a cafe and bar, along with 14 shops, many featuring Kansas City artists and makers.

▪ Madison’s Neighborhood Eatery, 915 to 991 W. 44th St. It planned to open this summer but now the opening has been pushed back indefinitely.

▪ Midtown Market, 3967 Main St. Formerly called Worlds Grocer it plans to open later this month.

▪ Papa Keno’s Pizzeria, 14850 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park. August opening.

▪ Raising Cane’s Chicken Fingers, 13710 S. Blackbob Road, Olathe. Late fall.

▪ Shack Breakfast & Lunch, 9329 Habringer St., Lenexa. Mid-to-late August.

▪ Transparent Brewing Co., 14501 White Ave., Grandview. Early August opening. The Chive, Simply Good Cafe/Market will share the space.

▪ T-Shotz, golf and entertainment complex, Metro North Crossing, U.S. 169 and Northwest Barry Road. September opening scheduled.

▪ Unforked, Woodside Village, 4719 Rainbow Blvd., Westwood. The owner did not respond.

▪ Wahlburgers, Hy-Vee, 301 N.E. Rice Road, Lee’s Summit. The Market Grille is converting to the Wahlburgers concept.

▪ West Bottoms Whiskey Co., 1321 W. 13th St. September opening scheduled.

▪ The Windmill KC, coffee shop, 840 S. 55th, Kansas City, Kansas. Late July.

Coming later

▪ Andy’s Frozen Custard plans to open in Liberty in the fall and in Overland Park’s Prairiefire in spring 2021.

▪ Big Whiskey’s American Restaurant & Bar, Southeast Fourth and South Salem streets, Oak Grove. It planned a Fourth of July opening but construction has not started and officials declined to comment.

▪ Bluhawk, 159th Street and Antioch Road in Overland Park. Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers plans to open “later this year.” Saltgrass Steakhouse planned to open a location there this year but officials couldn’t be reached for comment.

▪ Captain D’s, 7525 State Ave., Kansas City, Kansas. After a fire it is set to reopen in late 2020 or early 2021.

▪ Chick-fil-A wants to open in the 95Metcalf development at 95th Street and Metcalf Avenue in Overland Park.

▪ Chicken N Pickle, Prairefire, 135th Street and Nall Avenue, Overland Park. Spring 2021.

▪ La Fuente Mexican Street Food, Legends Outlets Kansas City, 10932 Stadium Drive, Kansas City, Kan. Fall opening scheduled.

▪ Lion’s Choice, Waldo, 1621 W. 76th St. No opening date was available.

▪ LongHorn Steakhouse, 95Metcalf South, at 95th Street and Metcalf Avenue in Overland Park. Late fall.

▪ Meat Mitch Barbecue, Ranch Mart North, 3600 W. 95th St., Leawood. Hopes to open in spring 2021.

▪ One North, new development at Interstate 35 and Armour Road, plans an early September opening for Starbucks. The rest of the development has been slowed by the COVID-19 crisis including Flow House.

▪ Pickle Bar + Kitchen, 135th Street and Switzer Road, Overland Park. Opening is on hold due to COVID-19, the owners said.

▪ PT’s Coffee Roasting Co., 8139 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park. Plans are on hold.

▪ Punch Bowl Social, 612 W. 47th St. Officials said they still plan to open in Kansas City and are “working through delayed opening dates at this time.”

▪ Raising Cane’s Chicken Fingers, 13710 Blackbob Road in Olathe. Early fall.

▪ Red Door Grill, Sonoma Plaza, 87th Street Parkway and Interstate 435 in Lenexa. Before Thanksgiving.

▪ Sinkers Lounge, Power & Light District, 53 W. 13th St. By the holidays.

▪ Taco Hangover, Lenexa City Center, 88th Street and Renner Road, Lenexa, Planned July opening has been put on hold because of COVID-19.

▪ Taylor’s Donuts, 1827 Louisiana St., Lawrence. Later this year.

▪ Torchy’s Tacos, 3050 Iowa St., Lawrence, in October, and 11919 S. Strang Line Road, Olathe, by the end of the year.

▪ Tin Roof, 424 Westport Road. On hold due to COVID-19 so no opening date was available.

▪ Tom Colicchio’s food hall, Mission Gateway, Johnson Drive and Roeland Drive, Mission. No opening date was available.
