A video posted by Bonner Springs police shows dramatic footage of a car slamming into a vehicle before crashing into a patrol car.

The police department warned drivers to slow down as roads remained slick following a winter storm that dumped more than 9 inches of snow on parts of the Kansas City metro.

The video shows a Bonner Springs officer helping a driver who was stopped on the side of Interstate 435 around 7 a.m. Friday. The officer starts to walk towards his vehicle when another car veers into the stopped vehicle and then careens into the patrol car.

“We meed some help out here, we just got hit by the side of the road,” an officer radios.

The two civilian drivers had minor injuries and were treated on the scene by first responders. The three vehicles, however, had major damage.

The crash is one of 10 that occurred between midnight Thursday and Friday afternoon, according to Sgt. Heather Pate, a public information officer for the department.

“Its been quite a bit more than we expected. Usually there aren’t many accidents after a storm like this,” she said.

Pate explained one reason could be black ice which accumulated overnight. The ice appears clear and has been a problem for drivers in the past.

“If you start to slide, let off the gas and do not pump the breaks,” she said.

The National Weather Service issued a similar warning to drivers over social media, asking people to slow down on snowy roads.
