A winter storm warning was issued for Kansas City and surrounding areas Wednesday as an approaching winter storm threatens to dump a half a foot of snow and ice in the region, according to the National Weather Service in Kansas City.

The storm warning, which goes into effect at midnight and runs through 6 p.m. Thursday, covers Kansas City and portions of east-central and northeast Kansas and central, north-central, northwest and west-central Missouri.

“Heavy mixed precipitation expected,” the weather service said. “Total snow accumulations of 4 to 6 inches and ice accumulations of up to one tenth of an inch. Winds gusting as high as 35 mph.”

In general, ice accumulations below .25 of an inch are more of a nuisance, although travel could become dangerous as roads and bridges become slick and windshields can be coated. Accumulations less than .50 of an inch can cause tree limbs to sag or break and can lead to some isolated power outages.

Travel is expected to be difficult during the storm as roads turn slick after becoming ice and snow covered. Patchy blowing snow also could significantly reduce visibility. The hazardous conditions could impact both the morning and evening commutes.

“If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency,” the weather service advised.
