Winter storm making roads extra slick in KC? What to know before getting behind the wheel

Sudden changes in Kansas City’s weather during winter can make travel conditions dangerous with snow, ice and strong winds messing with the roads.

Star reporter Emily Curiel recently received some tips on driving in the snow, which included driving “like you have your grandma in the back holding a boiling pot of beans and she’s wearing a new Sunday dress,” not hitting the brake if the car starts sliding and to not drive at all.

Here’s what else you need to know about driving in the snow.

The Missouri Department of Transportation recommends that you should postpone your travels until the roads are clear, but if you have to go out, this is what you should do.

  • Slow down.

  • Give snow plows room, and don’t pass them.

  • Wear your seatbelt at all times.

  • Watch for other vehicles having problems with road conditions.

  • Keep your lights on and keep your mirrors, windows and lights clean.

  • Don’t pass other vehicles on or near bridges.

  • Keep your fuel tank at least half full.

  • If you start to feel uncomfortable driving, pull off of the highway and park at the first safe place.

In the case of an emergency where you’re stuck on the road, we have a guide for what you should have in your car and what to do to stay safe.

Maggie Green, KCMO spokesperson, told The Star that all drivers are reminded to exercise caution, especially around snow plow operators when pretreating or plowing. They should also allow extra travel time, and park off-street where possible, or on the north and west sides of neighborhood streets.

“Parking cars on only one side of residential streets will help plows clear streets faster and more completely,” Green said in a statement. “Please avoid parking on streets where there are streetcar tracks, or along corridors with frequent transit service, if other parking options exist.”

Kansas City snow crews will be pre-treating the roads Wednesday in preparation for Thursday’s snow. We have a detailed guide on the City’s snow plow operations, along with an interactive map to see when your street was last treated.
