Road conditions across the Kansas City metro remain hazardous a day after a winter storm dropped as much as nine inches of snow in some parts of the area.

Authorities are asking drivers to slow down and use caution as there may be black ice.

“The roads are still very slick this morning across the KC metro, along the I-70 corridor, and all other locations that received accumulating snowfall yesterday,” the National Weather Service in Kansas City said on Twitter. “Slow down & take your time to get to your destination.”

Temperatures overnight dropped to the single digits, leading to roads covered or partly covered in ice, said Spencer Mell, a meteorologist with the weather service.

Mell said major thoroughfares may be clear, but side streets may not be.

On Thursday, the local Missouri State Highway Patrol troop which covers 13 western Missouri counties, responded to 350 requests for service. That included 208 stranded motorists, 80 crashes with no injuries and five wrecks with reported injuries.

The snowstorm broke the record for daily snowfall at Kansas City International Airport which got 6.4 inches of snow. Kansas City, Kansas, reported 9.3 inches while Olathe got 7.5 inches and two-foot snow drifts.

The winter weather caused school closures and flight cancellations Thursday. Several area public schools and other services remain closed or have delayed openings Friday.

Temperatures are expected to rise above freezing this afternoon, Mell said, which will improve road conditions as ice and snow begin to melt.
