Winter storm hits Kansas City

Another round of winter weather has arrived in Kansas City, bringing with it ice, snow and wind gusts up to 35 mph. The storm has caused slick roads as well as school and office closures.

Services and government offices around the Kansas City metro have announced they will be closed Thursday ahead of a winter storm that could drop up to six inches of snow across the area.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for Kansas City and surrounding areas from midnight Wednesday through 6 p.m. Thursday. Between four to six inches of snow and wind gusts up to 35 mph are expected, the weather service said. Due to heavy precipitation, roads may be slick and visibility low, making for a dangerous commute.

In anticipation of the storm, Jackson County Circuit Court has closed their offices for in-person hearings, trials and other court business from 12 a.m. until 6 p.m. on Thursday.

Jackson County government offices will have a delayed start Thursday, with buildings and facilities opening at 10 a.m.

Kansas City Municipal Court hearings will be held virtually, except for domestic violence cases which will be rescheduled. To attend a virtual hearing, go to kcmo.gov/court and click “Virtual Hearing.”

Inclement weather has also led all Kansas City Public Library locations and the Harry S. Truman Presidential Library and Museum to close Thursday.

Recycling and trash pickup in Kansas City will be suspended Thursday and Friday. Those drivers will help help prepare the roads for snow and ice. Residents missing their scheduled trash day can place four bags outside next week along with unlimited curbside recycling.

Recycling and trash will not be collected Thursday in Kansas City, Kansas, but services are not expected to be delayed throughout the rest of the week, according to Dave Reno, a spokesman for public works.

The Bonner Springs City Library announced it would be closed Thursday.

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office announced that the Community Drug Education Summit, scheduled to take place at 6 p.m. Thursday at Vineyard Church, will be postponed. A new date will be announced soon. The Clay County Sheriff’s Office administrative offices also will be closed.

KC Mothers in Charge announced its office is closed and all programs and services have been canceled for Thursday.

The Olathe Public Library announced that both the Indian Creek Library and the Temporary Downtown Library will be closed. AARP Tax Prep will also be closed.
