The winter storm that cut through the Kansas City area Thursday certainly didn’t spare the region.
More than 9 inches fell in parts of the metro, according to preliminary snowfall totals reported to the National Weather Service in Kansas City.
The snowstorm, which created near blizzard conditions at times, set a daily record at Kansas City International Airport. Seven inches of snow fell at the airport, breaking the nearly 130-year-old record of 6 inches set back on Feb. 17, 1893.
The weather service canceled its winter storm warning for parts of the metro area shortly after 2 p.m. saying that snow had ended on the northern side of the Kansas City metro area and across portions of western Missouri and eastern Kansas.
“Hazardous driving conditions will exist through the evening due to snow covered roadways,” the weather service said.
Some of the areas seeing 9 inches or more included Weatherby Lake, Shawnee and Kansas City, Kansas. There were reports that strong winds created snowdrifts of a foot or two.
Meanwhile 8.8 inches fell in Lenexa, Overland Park and Parkville saw 8.5 inches, and Lansing and Platte Woods got 8 inches.
There was a sharp cutoff from areas that saw the heaviest snow and those that got more modest levels. The weather service reported that 3.2 inches of snow fell by noon at its offices in Pleasant Hill.
Other snowfall totals included 7 inches in Platte City and Independence, 6.5 in Spring Hill and 6 inches in Lake Tapawingo, Lone Jack and Stillwell.
Here’s a look at preliminary snowfall totals across the region:
