The Kansas City Chiefs found themselves on the wrong side of history Sunday. Not only did they lose their chance at winning three consecutive Super Bowls, but they found themselves facing one of the largest deficits since the inception of the big game.
The Philadelphia Eagles were victorious in Super Bowl LIX, defeating the Chiefs 40-22. The Chiefs were shutout in the first half and didn’t score until the end of the third quarter. The team found themselves down 34-0 and later 40-6 before two fourth-quarter touchdowns made the game seem closer than it was.
Quarterback Patrick Mahomes was sacked six times and threw two interceptions, and one of those was returned for a touchdown. The ball was also stripped away from him on one of those sacks.
How does this loss compare to other Super Bowl blowouts? Was this the worst championship blowout in Chiefs history? Here’s a look at past big games.
Chiefs Super Bowl blowouts
The Chiefs have lost three Super Bowls in franchise history, and each game wasn’t close. In addition to Feb. 9’s loss to the Eagles, the previous losses were also by double digits:
- 25 points: Green Bay Packers 35, Kansas City Chiefs 10 in Super Bowl I
- 22 points: Tampa Bay Buccaneers 31, Kansas City Chiefs 9 in Super Bowl LV
The biggest Super Bowl losses
Before the Chiefs scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter, they were well on their way to cracking the top five for largest score deficits in Super Bowl history, according to Pro Football Reference.
The largest blowout in big game history belongs to Super Bowl XXIV in 1990, when the San Francisco 49ers defeated the Denver Broncos 55-10. That’s a 45-point win for the 49ers, and the game also took place in the now-Caesars Superdome.
The Chicago Bears defeated the New England Patriots by 36 points in Super Bowl XX, with a final score of 46-10. It’s the second-biggest blowout in Super Bowl history.
The AFC West has had its fair share of lopsided losses in the big game. The Denver Broncos were blown out 43-8 by the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl XLVII in 2014, a 35-point loss.
Fellow divisional team Las Vegas Raiders lost 48-21 to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Super Bowl XXXVII in 2003, a 27-point difference, and the Los Angeles Chargers were also blown out by the 49ers in Super Bowl XXIX, losing 49-26, a 23-point difference.
Here are some of the largest blowouts in Super Bowl history.
- 35 points: Dallas Cowboys 52, Buffalo Bills 17 in Super Bowl XXVII
- 32 points: Washington Redskins 42, Denver Broncos 10 in Super Bowl XXII
- 27 points: Baltimore Ravens 34, New York Giants 7 in Super Bowl XXXV
- 23 points: San Francisco 49ers 49, San Diego Chargers 26 in Super Bowl XXIX
