Kansas City Chiefs vs. Philadelphia Eagles: Live updates & analysis from Super Bowl LIX
The Kansas City Chiefs have already made history by getting to this point, but Super Bowl LIX has the chance to be a monumental occasion for Patrick Mahomes, Andy Reid and company.
Standing in their way? The Philadelphia Eagles.
The Chiefs and Eagles will meet in Super Bowl LIX. The Chiefs, with a win, will earn the first three-peat of the Super Bowl era. The Eagles, meanwhile, are looking to avenge a loss on this very stage from two years ago.
The Star’s Jesse Newell predicts a close matchup, and the oddsmakers are thinking similarly.

Top storylines for KC Chiefs vs. PHI Eagles
1. Patrick Mahomes’ place in history
Patrick Mahomes is chasing history as the first quarterback to three-peat in the Super Bowl era — with a win — and he’s quickly rising the ranks of the all-time greats at quarterback.
He’ll be playing in front of Tom Brady, on the call for Fox, on Super Bowl Sunday. And he can add the latest accomplishment to a championship lineage that began when he ... was 4 or 5 years old (really).
2. Is this it for Travis Kelce? Andy Reid?
Let’s start here: Neither Travis Kelce nor Andy Reid have said they plan on retiring. In fact, Chiefs owner Clark Hunt was fairly direct when he said: “I don’t have a sense that (Reid) is remotely close to wanting to be done.”
There’s no question, though, Kelce and Reid are two of the all-time greats in their respective roles. A third consecutive title would only add to their storied careers.
(Kelce, by the way, isn’t just a great player. He’s a great teammate, too.)
3. Saquon Barkley is good. His Eagles teammates are, too
The Eagles may very well be the best team the Chiefs have faced all season. Saquon Barkley put up monster numbers at running back, and Jalen Hurts has no shortage of weapons in the passing game. (That’s one of Blair Kerkhoff’s areas to watch.)
Jalen Carter leads a defensive front that will test a reshaped Chiefs offensive line. And the Eagles’ offensive line is as good as it gets. I’m sure I don’t have to tell you about the “Brotherly Shove.”
The Eagles placed six players on the AP’s All-Pro teams, two more than the Chiefs. There will be playmakers all over the field Sunday. It’s a star-studded Super Bowl.
More Kansas City Chiefs coverage
They say the Super Bowl goes by fast for those playing in it, but the wait until kickoff can be excruciating. Pass the time with the latest Chiefs coloring page, or by checking out some of our coverage from New Orleans.
- How does a Chiefs play call work? Well, it starts with Andy Reid and ends with Patrick Mahomes, but the process is a bit more complicated than you’d think.
- Are you tired of hearing about the referee conspiracies? Well, turns out the Chiefs — and the league — are too. They called those theories “insulting and preposterous.”
- What happens when the Super Bowl ends? The Kansas City Chiefs must lock down these free agents, including some big-name players like Trey Smith.
