Roads remain treacherous in the Kansas City area as the area begins to dig out after a historic massive winter storm brought blizzard conditions and snowbound the metro with nearly a foot of snow.

The snow stopped falling overnight and any lingering flurries were expected to end by sunrise, the National Weather Service said in its latest forecast.

Bone-chilling cold has spread across the region as the storm exited, plunging wind chills to as low as 15 degrees below zero. The dangerous cold will remain for a while, with temperatures struggling to get out of the teens and plummeting to near zero overnight.

The frigid, wintry weather prompted many Kansas City schools to cancel classes and local governments to shut down Monday.

A warm-up is expected to begin Thursday, with temperatures climbing into the 20s, however temperatures will remain below freezing through Sunday.
