KC police investigate five killings in less than a week. Here are the details
Kansas City police are investigating a violent stretch of five killings in the city in less than a week.
Kansas City has recorded 51 homicides so far in 2026, according to a database kept by The Star. Despite the violent week, homicides in Kansas City are down compared to this point last year. As of May 26, 2025, Kansas City had recorded 65 killings.
Here are the details of each of the killings from the last week:
May 22: Police were called to an apartment unit in a complex in the 500 block of Northwest Englewood Road on a welfare check around 7 a.m. after family members requested a check. There, police found a man and a woman who had died of gunshot wounds.
A Kansas City police spokesman said investigators were waiting for the Jackson County Medical Examiner’s Office to make determinations about the deaths but said police considered the man and woman to be the only people involved in the incident and said police were not looking for any suspects.
The man and woman were identified as Joshua Gore, 23, and Kiayah Rainey, 22.
May 25: Police were called to a shooting around 6:30 p.m. in the 5800 block of Michigan Avenue and found a man who had been shot and was unresponsive. The man was taken to a hospital and was declared dead there. Police said the victim had been in an argument that escalated to the shooting and that a person of interest was taken into custody.
The victim was identified as Calvin Washington, 27.
May 25: Police were called to the shooting in a parking garage at the Bally’s Kansas City Casino in the 1800 block of East Front Street around 11:45 p.m. Officers found a man who had been shot, and he was taken to a hospital, where he was declared dead. Police said the victim was in a group that got into an altercation with another group that eventually escalated to gunfire.
The victim was identified as Richard Miller, 45.
May 26: Police were called to an apartment unit in the 9300 block of Newton Avenue around 9:45 p.m. and found a man who had been shot. He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police said a person of interest was taken into custody.
The victim was identified as Joshua Quarles, 31
