One man dead after Memorial Day shooting near Montessori school in Kansas City
One man is dead after a shooting in the Blue Hills neighborhood on Memorial Day.
Kansas City police responded to reports of shots at around 6:30 p.m. May 25 near 58th Street and Michigan Avenue. While en route, the call was upgraded to a shooting call.
Police found an adult male unresponsive in the street outside of a house on the block. The victim was transported by EMS to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries and died shortly after arriving.
Police say the victim and at least two other people had a verbal altercation in front of a residence, which led to multiple gunshots and the victim being struck. A person of interest was found nearby and has been detained.
Captain Jake Becchina said that detectives will be working with prosecutors to present all of the available investigative findings for prosecutors’ determination of applicable charges.
The scene was right outside Our Lady’s Montessori School, 5809 Michigan Ave. Police said that it is unknown if any gunshots hit the school.
It is the 49th homicide in Kansas City this year, according to data tracked by The Star.
Police are committed to assisting victims of violent crimes through use of Missouri’s Protection Program for Victims/Witnesses of Violent Crime, Becchina said. “Funding for temporary, or even permanent relocation, may be available but is subject to pre-approval by the State’s administering agency.”
