Kansas City police are investigating a fatal shooting at a south Kansas City apartment complex Tuesday night.

Capt. Jake Becchina, a spokesman for the Kansas City Police Department, said officers responded to an apartment in the 9300 block of Newton Avenue around 9:45 p.m. on a shooting call. Inside a unit there, they found a man who had been shot and was unresponsive.

Emergency crews treated the man and took him to an area hospital where he was declared dead.

Police detained one person of interest at the scene for further investigation, Becchina said.

Preliminary investigation indicated that the victim and at least one other person were inside the apartment when the man was shot, Becchina said.

Anyone with information about the shooting may contact police by calling 816-234-5043 or by calling the TIPS Hotline anonymously at 816-474-TIPS.

The killing was Kansas City’s 51st homicide of 2026 and the city’s fifth killing in the last week, according to data tracked by The Star, which includes fatal police shootings. At this point in 2025, the city had recorded 65 killings.
