Fatal shooting Sunday evening marks 6th homicide in Kansas City in 26 hours: police

A man in his late teens or early 20s was fatally shot Sunday evening on Kansas City’s west side — the sixth homicide reported to police within 26 hours.

Officers responded to the shooting before 7:30 p.m. in the parking lot of the Tony Aguirre Community Center in the 2000 block of West Pennway Terrace, said Sgt. Jake Becchina, a spokesman for the Kansas City Police Department.

Witnesses told detectives they saw an altercation near a vehicle in the parking lot before shots were fired. The victim collapsed and the vehicle fled the area, according to police.

The victim died at a hospital. He has not been identified.

Agents in Kansas City as part of Operation LeGend, a federal crime-fighting initiative, were working along with detectives at the scene. They helped gather information by canvassing the area, among other things.

“This has been a draining day, but it would have been more draining were those federal investigators not there right alongside of them,” Becchina told reporters.

The killing marked the 127th homicide this year in Kansas City, according to data maintained by The Star, which includes police shootings. By this time last year, there had been 90 homicides.

Earlier Sunday, a woman in her 50s was found dead about 5 p.m. at a home in the 8100 block of Ward Parkway Plaza. Police were investigating her death as a homicide.

About the same time, detectives were called to a fatal shooting in a parking lot of the Kansas City Zoo. That victim, a man, was shot while inside a vehicle in the 6800 block of Zoo Drive, police said.

About 7:30 a.m. Sunday, a man in his 20s was fatally shot inside a home in the 3700 block of Benton Boulevard.

And at 6 p.m. Saturday, two unresponsive men with gunshot wounds were found in the backyard of a home near East 47th Terrace and Sterling Avenue. Both were declared dead at the scene.
