Woman killed Sunday is 5th homicide victim within 24 hours in Kansas City, police say

Detectives are investigating the death of a woman found Sunday in a Kansas City home as a homicide — the fifth reported to police within 24 hours.

Officers were called at 5 p.m. to the 8100 block of Ward Parkway Plaza, two blocks east of Ward Parkway, for an unknown medical call, said Sgt. Jake Becchina, a spokesman for the Kansas City Police Department.

Inside the home, officers found a woman in her 50s who was pronounced dead at the scene.

It’s not clear exactly how the woman died, Becchina said, but her death was not consistent with natural causes.

A relative of the woman, who is in her 20s, was detained by police. She was at the scene when officers arrived.

“We believe this situation was contained inside this residence between these two family members,” Becchina said, “so in that sense, it would have been a domestic violence situation.”

The killing marked the 126th homicide this year in Kansas City, according to data maintained by The Star, which includes police shootings. By this time last year, there had been 90 homicides.

The woman’s death was also the fifth homicide reported to police within 24 hours in Kansas City. Shortly before they responded to Ward Parkway Plaza, police were called to a fatal shooting in a parking lot of the Kansas City Zoo.

On Twitter, Damon Daniel, president of AdHoc Group Against Crime, said the five people were “taken senselessly to violence.”

“Praying for all those who’ve suffered the loss of a loved one to violence,” he wrote.

Earlier Sunday, man in his 20s was fatally shot before 7:30 a.m. inside a home in the 3700 block of Benton Boulevard, police said.

At 6 p.m. Saturday, two unresponsive men with gunshot wounds were found in the backyard of a home near East 47th Terrace and Sterling Avenue. Both were declared dead at the scene.
