Man shot, killed in Kansas City Zoo parking lot; police investigating as homicide
A man was killed Sunday afternoon in a parking lot of the Kansas City Zoo, police said.
The shooting occurred just before 5 p.m. inside a vehicle in the 6800 block of Zoo Drive, according to Sgt. Jake Becchina, a spokesman for the Kansas City Police Department.
There appeared to be no additional danger to anyone at the zoo, police said.
Off-duty officers working at the zoo were alerted to the shooting when they were told someone had collapsed in the parking lot. They quickly realized the man had been shot and began rendering aid.
The man died at a hospital. He has not been identified publicly.
It appeared the shooting unfolded when four people who were leaving the zoo got inside a car, police said. The other three people were detained at the scene.
Federal agents in Kansas City through Operation LeGend, a crime-fighting initiative, were assisting police at the scene, Becchina said.
Also Sunday evening, police responded to a second homicide in the 8100 block of Ward Parkway Plaza, Becchina said. The two killings were among five homicides in the city within 24 hours.
The killings marked the 125th and 126th homicides this year in Kansas City, according to data maintained by The Star, which includes police shootings. By this time last year, there had been 90 homicides.
