Kansas City foodies: Hungry for something new?
The metro is constantly debuting its fair share of coffee shops, bars and eateries. The Star aims to keep readers abreast of all things dining, so they might be the coveted friends in their social groups to say, “Have you heard about this new restaurant?”
In the spirit of trendiness, here’s The Star’s list of all the restaurants that opened in June.
Happy reading (and eating)!
Martin City Tavern & Terrace, 1999 Main St.
A sister spot of Martin City Brewing Co., Martin City Tavern & Terrace opened June 5, serves its signature pizzas as well as expanded menu items like smashburgers and tacos. Its IPAs and stouts are still on tap at the new location. Perhaps its most notable feature is its rooftop terrace that offers panoramic views.
Artifact Coffee & Goods, 310 W. Eighth St.
Marlee Ogden and Zack Scott, both 23 years old, took over the old Vested Coffee location to open a new shop that serves coffee while highlighting goods made by local artists and businesses. Their space officially opened its doors June 6.
Casa Ama, 8228 Mission Road, Leawood
Billie’s sister spot, Casa Ama, opened June 8 in the former Salty Iguana space. While the restaurant largely serves Mexican-American food, owner Robin Krause doesn’t stick solely to one food genre.
Current State Coffee Roasting, 11217 Johnson Drive, Shawnee
Taking over a red brick building built in the 1930s, Current State Roasting opened June 9. Its owners have connections to Seleno, Messenger and The Filling Station, and they plan to expand the shop’s wholesale offerings.
Toastique, 6445 W. 135th St., Overland Park
The gourmet toast and juice franchise, hailing from Washington, D.C., opened in Johnson County on June 12. It’s the first Kansas City-area location and has more than 60 locations across the country.
Vietnam Cafe (second location), 9500 W. 135th St., Overland Park
A beloved Vietnamese restaurant from Columbus Park opened its second area restaurant on June 17. A manager told The Star they decided to add the location due to the number of customers who would drive 35 to 45 minutes several times a week to the original location.
Sandlot Social, 12120 W. 95th St., Lenexa
The bar and restaurant near Oak Park Mall opened June 17, with massive screens, an extensive menu and 10 baseball simulators. While Sandlot Social sells drinks, it’ll be a more family-friendly atmosphere during the day.
Bar Phoebe, 708 E. 18th St.
An Americana-style bar opened June 18 atop a Molzer Development property. It has ‘70s-themed furniture, specialty drinks, bites and panoramic views. It’s an indoor-outdoor space, with garage bay doors that open to an outdoor deck.
Apparition Coffee, 328 W. 85th St.
A heavy metal-inspired coffee shop opened June 19, in the former Second Best Coffee space. It serves coffee, tea and matcha. Several of the Second Best employees have been rehired and will bring back the beloved burritos.
R. Qahwah Cafe, 7317 W. 95th St., Overland Park
A Yemeni coffee shop opened late June in the former Mud Pie space, offering Yemeni lattes, baklava, blackberry matcha and more offerings. It’s open late, and it’s the third spot to offer Yemeni coffee in the metro.
