Openings & Closings

Locally owned accessories store closes on Kansas City’s Plaza after 5 years

A locally owned shop on the Country Club Plaza is closing its doors on the last day of 2025.

Nickel & Suede, a Liberty-based accessories business, announced its departure from the Plaza on social media Saturday. The retailer, located across the street from the Apple store, carried everyday leather earrings, handbags and belts, among other items.

Founder Kilee Nickels wrote, “We have done our best to make the most of this beautiful space and iconic center for five years, but it’s time for a change.”

The business, founded in 2014, will continue to operate an e-commerce site and Liberty store. The products are stocked in area stores like Nordstrom and Rally House, according to the Nickel & Suede website. The Star called the store and emailed the owner and store manager and did not receive comment.

Nickel & Suede’s departure from the historic Kansas City shopping center comes after a number of high-profile changes

This month, The Star reported that insurance brokerage Lockton will move its headquarters from the Plaza to Leawood. And Beauty Brands closed its Plaza salon, along with another Kansas City-area store, this month.

However, there are a number of announced additions to the Plaza, including a KC Current team store, a HGTV-featured designer’s furniture shop and a pop-up store from women’s fashion brand LoveShackFancy.

Advertising firm Barkley will move its headquarters just south of The Plaza, from its current offices in the Crossroads’ TWA building.

Dallas-based Gillon Property Group bought the Plaza in 2024 and promised to improve the district to the tune of $1.5 billion. Their vision includes bringing in new tenants and hundreds of apartments and asking for tax incentives and taller buildings.

The Star’s Jenna Thompson contributed to this report.
