Kansas City-based beauty store closing two locations in the metro
A Kansas City-based beauty store is closing two of its locations.
Beauty Brands is shutting down its stores at 15320 Shawnee Mission Parkway in Shawnee and 438 Ward Parkway in the Country Club Plaza.
David Bernstein, CEO of Beauty Brands, told The Star via text that the two locations would close Dec. 28.
“We were able to offer positions to the associates at those two locations,” Bernstein said. “And I am happy to report that all of our managers and a majority of our salon professionals will be relocating to other KC locations.”
Its other metro locations — which include 13421 State Line Road, 951 NE Rice Road in Lee’s Summit and 7501 W. 119th St. in Overland Park — will remain open.
The Lawrence Times reported on Wednesday that the company’s Lawrence location would also close on Dec. 28.
Beauty Brands was founded by Bob Bernstein in 1995. Bob Bernstein also founded Kansas City advertising company Bernstein-Rein and is credited with inventing the McDonald’s Happy Meal.
At the time Beauty Brands launched, it offered a unique concept of a full-service salon, spa and retail under one roof. It later faced competition from companies like Ulta Beauty. In 2014, Bob Bernstein sold a majority of the company’s interest to a private company out of California.
At the end of 2018, Beauty Brands announced it would close 25 stores and reduce its staff. It declared bankruptcy in 2019, but Bob Bernstein bought several stores out of the company’s bankruptcy estate months later.
Bob Bernstein’s son, David Bernstein, became the CEO in 2019.
