Kansas City Plaza space has been closed for three years. Tenant is moving in

After being dark for more than three years, a spot on Kansas City’s Country Club Plaza will soon become a soccer-centric hub.

The former Starbucks at 302 Nichols Road is turning into an official KC Current merchandise store.

Launching Wednesday, The Current Shop will sell exclusive apparel, goods from local brands like Charlie Hustle and Made Mobb, customizable goods, and other novelty items. This is The Current Shop’s second store, with the original team shop located inside CPKC Stadium.

The store promises “consistent programming” with different brands and Current players, according to a media release from the team.

“We are looking forward to activating this multipurpose retail space in the heart of the historic Country Club Plaza and cannot wait for fans to experience our brand at this new location,” said vice president of marketing Jocelyn Monroe. “Having best-in-class merchandise readily available to our fans is extremely important way we continue to connect with our fans.”

The shop will be open daily from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

On Thanksgiving, the spot will be open from 5 to 9 p.m. so fans can visit the new spot during the Plaza lighting ceremony. Members from the team will flip the switch at this year’s ceremony.

Meanwhile, the team store inside CPKC will close temporarily after the 2025 NCAA Women’s College Cup, held inside the stadium through Dec. 8. The store will reopen in time for the next season, according to KC Current.

The former Starbucks on the Plaza closed in 2022, a few months after employees at the shop unionized.
