Another longtime upscale retailer closes on Kansas City’s Country Club Plaza
Kansas City’s iconic shopping district, the Country Club Plaza, has lost another premium retailer.
Its Michael Kors store is listed as “closed” on the company’s website, the logo is off the building and an orange construction cone blocks the entrance. Corporate officials did not return calls or emails this week seeking comment on the closing.
A Plaza spokeswoman said: “A current list of retailers can be found on (the) Country Club Plaza website. Michael Kors’ parent company stated in 2020 that it would close a number of stores over the course of two years. This falls in line with the announced strategy.”
The luxury accessories and apparel retailer opened more than a decade ago in a prime corner spot at 4747 Broadway.
It still has an outlet store in the Legends Outlets Kansas City, 1847 Village West Parkway, Suite K123, in Kansas City, Kansas.
The Plaza also lost several other longtime tenants this past month:
▪ Kate Spade New York closed at 321 Nichols Road after more than a decade.
▪ Sister retailers Victoria’s Secret and Pink closed in a corner spot (with their own entrances) at 455 Nichols Road. Victoria’s Secret had been in its spot since late 2000.
▪ Brighton Collectibles closed at 213 W. 47th St., on a bustling artery of the Plaza. It opened in 2001.
▪ Pink Dinosaur boutique has been operating at 415 Nichols Road since September but closed in January, according to a manager at the Zona Rosa store. The Plaza store is empty and the logo is off the building, but it is still listed on the company’s website.
The Plaza currently has about two dozen empty spaces.
The west side of the Plaza also has an empty lot waiting for Nordstrom to relocate from Overland Park’s Oak Park Mall. It had originally scheduled a 2021 opening but has pushed back the date twice, blaming the pandemic. In late January, Nordstrom said it still planned a fall 2023 opening.
Cult favorite Psycho Bunny men’s apparel store as well as Pure Barre fitness studio are listed as tenants opening soon on the Plaza, but officials with the two operations couldn’t be reached for comment.
Club Pilates plans to open in late winter at 610 W. 48th St. Coveted Home had previously operated in the space but closed in summer 2019.
