Brighton Collectibles, which opened on the Country Club Plaza two decades ago, has closed.

A spokeswoman said the lease expired and the company chose not to renew it.

The accessories chain opened at 213 W. 47th St., on a main artery of the shopping district, in August 2001. It sold jewelry, handbags, wallets, sunglasses, belts and other items.

A Plaza spokeswoman declined to comment on the closing and directed questions to Brighton.

It has a store in Leawood’s Town Center Plaza and its products also are sold at other area outlets including Von Maur in Overland Park.

The Plaza currently has about two dozen empty spaces. It recently lost Kate Spade New York and sister retailers Victoria’s Secret and Pink, which were in a corner space but each had outside entrances.
