Nordstrom pushes back Country Club Plaza store opening beyond next year due to COVID-19

Pre-pandemic, Nordstrom was set to jump from Overland Park’s Oak Park Mall to the Country Club Plaza in 2021.

Now the retailer has confirmed a new opening date — 2022.

In a statement Thursday afternoon, Nordstrom said: “Due to the impact of COVID-19, construction on our new store at Country Club Plaza in Kansas City, Missouri, has been delayed. Our opening is now scheduled for the Fall 2022. We’re looking forward to serving customers in this location in the future.”

Plaza officials couldn’t be reached for comment.

To make way for the new 122,000-square-foot store, several buildings on the Plaza’s west side were demolished in 2019, including the spaces formerly housing the Capital Grille, Blanc Burgers + Bottles and Bank of America. (Capital Grille and Bank of America relocated.)

But after the COVID-19 shelter-in-place orders, many retailers were regrouping. On May 5, Nordstrom announced that it would close 16 of its full-line stores to strengthen its business for the long-term.

This month, just a few workers were on the Plaza site as reconfiguration of Jefferson Street was completed.
